The pregnant uterus has been opened to show the foetus in its typical bent position (note that Susini has granted himself the artistic licence of depicting the foetus while holding the umbilical cord with his little hand). We can also clearly see the amniotic sac, and the site of implantation of the placenta on the uterine fundus.
The placenta appears to be a sponge-like mass filled with blood; the vessels of the middle layer of the myometrium are greatly dilated.
