Paolo
Mascagni (1752 - 1815).
Anatomist. Took the chair as professor of Anatomy at the University
of Pisa. Taught also at Bologna, Padua and Florence.
Mainly studied lymphatic vessels and wrote a work on these in
1787 ("Vasorum lymphaticorum corporis humani historia et
iconographia"). He was the first to observe the phenomenon
of red cell diapedesis (insinuation of red cells through vessel
walls during inflammation). He wrote two textbooks, published
posthumously, for students of anatomy: "Prodromo della
grande anatomia" [General introduction to anatomy] (1821)
and "Anatomicae universae iconae" (1823).
