The first museum of Antiquities and Natural History was set up in accordance with the wishes of Viceroy Charles Felix, who housed it in the Viceroy's palace located next to the Archbishop's Palace in Cagliari, current home to the Prefecture. In 1806, the Museum was transferred to the University Building. The first director was Cavalier Don Leonardo De Pruner, who ran the museum from 1802 to 1824. In 1858, Susini's wax models and other exhibits were taken away from the rest of the museum to form a separate "Anatomical Laboratory", of which the Anatomy Professor was custodian and director. The university Museum was located in the first room on the left of the second floor of Palazzo Belgrano. In 1923, the wax models were moved to the new Institute of Human Anatomy, which is still located in the same building. The wax anatomical models have been in permanent exhibit in the Museum's pentagonal room since 1991.
